Hendey Lathe Refurbish

Fantastic thread from start to finish!
Thanks for all the effort for photos, and write-up.
Your second lathe is officially better than my only lathe.

Nice job! Looks like a 3 jaw combo chuck, don't see many of them around.

I just made an extended tailstock screw for my SB9 using acme threaded rod, didn't take long at all. I don't know what pitch/ diameter yours is, but it might be worth looking into how much a foot or three of acme threaded rod costs.

It is a combo chuck... I acquired this Union combo chuck and a 10" Rohm combo chuck with my South Bend. The Rohm lives on the SB, the Union is a 'spare'...

I have already bought a 3 foot length of ⅝-8 tpi left hand acme rod for the tailstock screw... I need to make a new screw for my little Hendey also... it has been shortened also and is the same size.

McMaster had the left hand acme in 2 different grades... I chose the higher grade, 3 feet was around $40 or so.

It's great to see an old machine brought back to life and ready for decades more of useful work.
Excellent job!

sorry I just looked at the pictures did not do much reading but are those the original oil daubers on the headstock?

They aren't daubers... they are plugs that cover the holes where oil is added to the bearing reservoirs...

This lathe didn't originally have any daubers...

Edit: Actually it did have one dauber on the tailstock... I don't have it... it was missing when I bought it.

The last 3 weeks, I have been busy with other projects, but have finally found time to make a new screw for the tailstock on this old Hendey...

The original is on the top, the new one is on the bottom... it is long enough to eject the chucks and centers from the quill. I used a piece of ⅝" x 8 tpi left hand acme, fitted with a sleeve where it goes through the register on the tailstock. The end is threaded ⁷/¹⁶" x 14 tpi for the handwheel nut.

This is where it ejects the tools...

I am finished with this lathe for now... even though I have more plans for improvements and tooling for it...

Thanks to everyone who has followed along with this thread, and especially, thanks to everyone who has commented and offered suggestions and advice along the way... I really appreciate it!

I'm currently keeping my eyes open for my next project... maybe another Hendey, maybe a shaper? IDK... we'll see...

It's been a while since I finished this old lathe... it is running great. I'm pretty satisfied with how it turned out.

Now I have a question...

Anybody that follows the 'what did you buy today' thread has probably read where I bought another Hendey...

20210519_113116.jpg

This one is a 14 x 8, made in 1921. I drove 2,094 miles round trip to pick it up... and also bought an old camelback drill press from the same seller.

I am about to start refurbishing this Hendey, and have been debating on whether to do a build thread on it, or not...

Would anyone have any interest in another Hendey refurbish thread? Or is one enough?

I'm really not trying to bore anyone to tears...

Thanks- Bear
