A fellow brother asked if I could make a Ti spear/javelin. He had only 3 criteria aside from being Ti.... 30" long, knurled, & sharp as f**k! As usual he left the rest up to me, thank you for your trust in me & your patience putting up with me. Here's what I came up with....but with a "twist".

-Ti 6Al4V
-31.75" OAL
-5/8"Ø
-Carbidized Tips
-2-n-1 Design

Beautiful work, Will. I am curious - are these legal for competition?

Thanks Mike. Haha, yeah, I don't think so on that part. I didn't know what to think but I thought nothing of it. This was for a member of a private knife forum I'm a member of. We're all responsible there.

The member asked me if I could make him a spear with nothing particular in mind. Left all the details up to me. He was very happy. I never asked what he wanted it for but he told me in case I was wondering, "it was for killing zombies". :)

Yeah, I bet he was happy. I don't know about zombies but he has a beautiful and unique piece of art that nobody else has.

Beautiful work, Will! I've never worked with Titanium, so I am definitely not criticizing here, but I do have a question. I noticed that the finish at the sharp tips has a mottled appearance. Is this due to the way that Ti machines, or is it due to spinning in the cup dead center? Or maybe something else?

Thanks Terry. On the sharper taper I used a very fast feed rate to achieve the rings/spiral, that was intentional. But the mottled appearance that you are wondering about, that is intentional too. Titanium, especially less alloyed grades, does not have a great resistance to wear. And that is why you rarely see knife bladeds made out of titanium.

What you see is carbidizing, not to be confused with carburizing as I've seen some people call it that. I have a carbidizer which electrically embeds carbide onto the surface to help increase wear resistance. Other metals can be carbidized as well. I also carbidized the tips on my Ti ice picks.

For the spear I did it for functional reasons. But I have also carbidized stuff for cosmetics over function like this:
