Excellco 602 Mill

Ok, it seems my error is in the rack and pinion on the rpm dial, must have come out at some point. Any ways, tops all done with new bearings, seals, bushings, belt etc. Now time for the dirty bottom.13b5f5414c7c3d72c5155b929b6ec57f.jpg3d92fb1a9210e174e9f9bdf0f3b48540.jpg5ac3a1101664adb14173641a1fe7c946.jpgafc3d738406ceb05a30bdb950194d56b.jpg

Figured out why the power feed doesn't work. Sheared 'er right off.

Everything else looks good. It's surprising to me that there was no belt slip or key sheared before a 1/2" steel shaft spun off. It's an easy shaft to replace, but the break doesn't line up at all so getting the gear mesh right is gonna be tough.feeddfc89612b848ea24a3afeb86d0c7.jpg

Got it back together and running great. I tore down the motor, the variable speed, the spindle feed, and back gears I pulled the table, saddle and knee. Also ore down the table feed. I'm looking for a single phase motor to get the table feed going, but the repair to the shaft went well. Everything is running smoothly and it's amazingly quiet! Working on my Kurt now and cleaning up the wiring.

Mr Waters....nice job on the mill repair. I, too, have a 602 and am looking for some comparisons to other ExCellOs. I just finished yesterday, replacing motor bearings, motor sheave sliding key, spindle lower sheave bearing, gimbol bearing and drive belt. The new belt made the biggest reduction in noise.

Now for the questions...
What is your serial number? Is there a placard on your mill indicating what lube to use in your Hi/Lo gear box? What is the HP of the head? Which VSD belt are you using?

You talked about speed adjustment fork and stop nuts. On mine, the nuts are factory set and pinned in place with roll pins, thus no easy adjustment. My actual spindle speeds are quit a bit higher than the dial is indicating (at 100 RPM setting the spindle is running at 152 RPM and at 2700 RPM setting the spindle is running at 3440 RPM). How does this compare to yours? Did you notice any way to adjust the Spindle RPM Plate (52-15218) to bring the indicated RPM more in line with the actual RPM?

I have 3 manuals for the 602s and none of them match my mill exactly...there is always some discrepancy.

Info on my mill....2 HP 1800 (1710) RPM motor, SN 6026152 (best that I can determine built in 1975), XLO on the front of the mill, ATF for spindle drive gear box. I'm using a "103317 Reeves" drive belt that crossed over to a 1922V321.

I appreciate any info you can supply.

Chris

SERIAL #6022249, it's a 1-1/2hp . I'm running the 1922v321 belt also, which makes me question your rpm issue, I believe the 1-1/2 and 2hp use different belts.

As for the screws on my VS screw, mine are held with a set screw. After studying the vs setup, I realize that the nuts are only stops. The rpm on my got off when I cleaned the rack on the gauge. The only way I can see adjusting the displayed rpm is to remove the face plate holding the dials after noting the amount of error, then slide the rack until it is not contacting the pinion on the rpm gauge, clock it and reassemble.

Also, mine doesn't match any of the documentation exactly, but it was close enough on most points. My only real world was not noting where the oiler flow meters were before disassembly for cleaning. I don't think I have the. In the correct locations and the numbers don't correlate with the only source I found with this info.

Finally, my mill does not have a label indicating proper gear oil. I have been told to use atf, I did not. Atf is approximately 10wt and the manual calls for MUCH thicker fluid. I chose Mobil synthetic gear oil, 70w90.

Thanks for the quick reply..

On the drive belts....2 manuals do not indicate any difference in belt size between the 1 1/2 HP and the 2 HP heads. The third manual does...I tried the larger 2322V365 belt and it was too long.

On the gear oil...one manual says SAE 30, another manual say AGMA 5EP and the third manual says ATF. I remember in the late 1970s getting a tech bulletin from Excello telling us to use ATF even thou the placard said AGMA 5EP. They said it gave better lubrication. (Where I worked, we bought a new 602 in 1978 (SN 6028462)...that's where I got one of my manuals. 35 years later I bought a 602 for my shop)

As far as oilers go, if you want, I could compare my other manuals to see which metering valves go where. I could also send you copies of the other 2 manuals that I have. It will add to the confusion, lol.

Thanks again
Chris

Please do, it sounds like you have documentation I do not. The gl5 is what I based my decision off. Gear oil is what has been in the head on my mill for years and the gears looked brand new, though the machine has seen a lot of use. I'll pm you my email address.
