Turns out Iam missing one pair of dividing head “arms” for my VN 7 1/2” DH. These arms help set the pin location on the indexing plates.

Anybody have an extra set just lying around they would like to sell?

The arms showing in the pictures came off a VN 10”. Exact same parts apparently. But, don’t want to strip them off one aDH and put on another.

If not, any suggestions on how to hold down some super thin stock so I can make another set?? These have to be 1/8” or maybe 3/16” thick. Nightmare set up if there ever was one.

Thanks
Glenn

Could you make them out of 1/8" aluminum plate Glenn? Might be some filing + lathe + mill work

I would look into laser cutting or water jet. You could make them thicker and grind the thickness to size on a surface grinder.

The fellow I just purchased my #12 from was showing me his Cnc setup. He was doing thin small aluminum parts and he used a "holding" block then used special tape to tape the thin stock down. He cleaned both parts well with solvent then put the tape on and pressed them in a vice to ensure contact. The holding block went into the vice and he ran the part.

Could you use a similar process with steel but use lock tight rather than tape. Use a "holder" block and glue the material to that? Machine the part and then heat to release lock tight.

I'm a newly so just a thought.

John, yes indeed, glueing down might be an excellent approach. I need to research what people use, as have never done this procedure before - only read about it.

Double-sided carpet tape works well for holding thin stock, as does super-glue. But I don't think that's the way to go here. If you want to make the them out of a single piece of stock, I would use stock that's the thickness of the fingers (it looks like the rings are half as thick, so that they stack). Drill three holes in the center of the blank (where the hole goes) and screw the blanks to a sacrificial pieces of aluminum. The blanks should be roughed out on the bandsaw, leaving maybe an eighth inch of stock outside your layout lines. With a blank screwed to the sacrificial plate, use a rotary table to cut the OD of the ring and the table's X-movement to cut the fingers to width. Use the rotary table to machine the ends of the fingers and the ring to thickness, leaving the center of the blank and the screws intact. Once the outside is machined, re-clamp the part using screws and washers around the OD of the ring and on the finger, remove the screws in the center and machine out the ID with the rotary table. Don't hesitate to put a tooling hole in the finger, if necessary.

Another option is to turn the rings on the lathe, machine the fingers on the mill and braze the fingers to the rings.

A pantograph would work well for this. Anybody close to you have one?

I'd use a thicker piece of brass and work it down to size and then cut off and hand finish the side or tip . Yes I'd use brass it works easy and finishes easy . Little buff looks great .

Any updates on your Sector Arms Glenn? I recently made an offer for a 7 1/2 & won. It too needs TLC & some parts - but it does have the arms. I'm supposed to be working on a VN 10 Vertical DH I recently bought - but temporary Dr's orders have me sticking to the smaller version. It felt good to be able to file away hammer marks & hone fit some of the moving parts. Here are pics & some measurements for you.
