OK, so I was buying some drill bits and a chuck from someone on Facebook Marketplace, and he brought along this boring head "kit" (although they didn't know that the parts all went together.

No markings!

Stainless. Uses a screw head (for adjusting) that I've never seen. It's hex, but tapered. Starts out at 3mm, gets larger (close to 3.75mm) at the bottom.
There's a cover that you ran rotate to cover/protect the adjustment screw. (at least that's my best guess)

I'm guessing this boring head kit came with a custom tool for adjusting.

Anyone seen a boring head like this? I was told that their parents worked at a Russian arms factory from the 60's to the mid 80's before moving to the US. Her dad was a machinist, and was able to bring some tools. He took a job at a company in Elk Grove to ride out until retirement.

I worked with a couple of Russian Tool & Die makers back in the mid '80's when I was still a Tool Designer.
The story they told was that they crated up their tools & got them out of the country somehow or another, and then separately got their families out and somehow or another landed in the US. They never went into any detail.
One of them gave me a drafting pencil and a scale that I still have and treasure.
They were great guys to work with.

Any thoughts on how I could buy/make a tool, so this could actually be used?
It's in good shape, and I'd love to see it make some chips...

Will any regular hex sockets fit the screws?
Is the hex drive tapered?

I would just find a hex socket that fits. The taper won't make much difference, you're not tightening it like a bolt.

The taper on the hex is probably to remove any backlash from the feel when adjusting. most likely had a key like an old clock winder. any hex socket should work. Nice looking unit.

So maybe try a 2.5mm socket? First I’ll have to find one. :)

Update...the person who sold me the boring head found some more attachments, including what looks like the original wrenches.

I will post some pictures.
