The GTN parting insert is cheaper from Germany with shipping than domestic sources. I'm looking at GTN 3 IC354 that number seems to come up only as an Iscar number. Is there a better insert to use?

The GTN-3 insert is very common. By including the IC354, you're likely specifying a manufacturer specific grade of carbide, edge prep, and coating, in this case from Iscar ($$$).

They can be had from all kinds of lower cost and import suppliers.

This Iscar has cut some pretty tough stuff, and I don't know what the equivalent would be in another brand. I going through David's book to see if I can figure it out, he has an Aloris number listed.

Ah, I thought you were referring to the insert shape/size. Matching grades between manufacturers is very imprecise since they are all proprietary and have no standardization. If you need it for a specific application, calling a tooling rep for a manufacturer you wish to use could help you identify what you need.

Thank you I'll give them a try.

You can give the Amazon ones a try, but I have purchased quite a few mainstrem brand inserts from the EU and they have had quick shipping and seem to be the real deal. When I used a GTN2 type holder I did try Cobra inserts and a few other inexpensive brands (both cutoff and threading) and they broke quickly, so they cost more in the long run. These are Iscar and not much more than the Amazon ones, probably the last box you will need to buy.

You bought this item....

I saw those last night, with the number of sales/positive reviews, and bought it. :encourage:
