I made about 10 attempts to cut a new gear but no luck.
I finally contacted Racer Machine here in Ontario. They have a gear in stock, but want $285USD +ship. I think that's a bit much, especially for me right now.
I got lucky though. My nephew was here on the weekend and it turns out he is working in a factory maintenance shop. He took the gear with him and is going to see if he can get one made for me. Fingers crossed.
Until then I am just just gonna have to work on learning other aspects of the lathe.
