if it isn't worn, the long axis play in the lead screw will be in a few likely spots:
endplay in the thrust bearing near the handle - strip, clean lube, tighten
Loose acme nut - it's only held in place with a grub screw - tighten that up
Also check the brackets are tight.
If you have the single acme nut like I do, cnctoolexpress/shoptask have some double nut upgrade sets left. These were standard on later machines. That's next on my list.
