1982 Lada Niva

Today i put in few more hours of washing gearbox parts, one of the gearboxes is completely cleaned and some of the parts from the other ones, i have to keep them in order so i can assemble them correctly. That is why i have clean next to dirty parts. From the looks of things i'll have enough good parts to make me two good boxes with only seals and gaskets I'm glad i took my time to do this because there is something wrong in every one that i bought. The diesel fuel in my parts washer is darker than engine oil from a diesel, but is still working. I'm washing every part twice, ones with diesel in the parts washer and one more time with gasoline to take off the oily residue.

I will often switch the brass synchro blocking rings. Switch 3 <-> 4 and 1<->2. This will reverse the direction, potentially offering a less worn side to the hub.

To me the hardest part is getting all of the interlock plungers in between the three shift rails, and making sure they stay there while you tap things together.

Yeah, interlock plungers look tricky in the past i've used grease to hold them in place. I do need to figure out where they all go, all 3 gearboxes have different ones. New parts are available, and are pretty cheap, here is a link, parts like synchros are 7$ they are all interchangeable Gears 10$ each 2-3$ seals and gaskets sets.

Today the work on the gearboxes continued. Chosen two output shafts, that are in good usable shape and started assembling the gears, synchros and other pieces, halfway thru i figured i won't have enough good synchros, so i went shopping and bought me 4 new bronze synchros. I also was searching for gaskets but i'll have to wait for them till monday or i'll just make them. I also bought me a new 1st gear because other 2 were not usable. I'm building both gearboxes at the same time, i'll be installing also new bearings in one of them. There is much more damaged parts then i thought, looks like someone was very rough with first and reverse gears.

Today i begin with searching the net for the interlock plungers diagram, only found one picture but that was enough. With that i continued assembly, i did clean parts as i needed, the shift forks on one for the boxes are completely wiped out someone had the bad habit of keeping his hand on the gear knob, i did use loctite on every bolt inside. i'll need to finde one high strength bolt because one is snapped for the spare gearbox, if i have few hours tomorrow i should have them together.

I have a headache just looking at your pile parts. You impress the heck out of me, taking on, and crushing that task.

Thanks Gaffer, i'm not afraid, i've done few french ones they are worse. I began with washing couple more parts, than i assembled the shift forks, interlock plungers, 5th and reverse gear assembly. I'm missing that one bolt to be able to put together the spare gearbox. So i focused on the main box, clean off the front and rear housings, had to make couple more gaskets, i also used some silicone on the joints, installed new oil seals front and rear, and torqued all the bolts to spec, only bolt left loose is the one on the output flange, i'll need to make me a bar to hold the flange for torquing. One thing that i found interesting, the sparol gear on the output shaft that is for the speedo one has 4 teeth other has 6 teeth, my niva dasent used them, they are just as a spacer, but that is telling me one of the boxes is from a newer niva and other is from a sedan one has 20"tires other has 27" my niva has a speedo drive on the transfer case.

Today i bought me couple of new tools to make my job a bit easier, bought me a cordless drill and an 1/2 impact driver. They are a cheap set and i bought them at a sale for 130$, i'm hoping it will make short work of this front suspension on the little niva.

After few attempts on disassembling the front suspension, i've come to the conclusion that i need one more tool, a big claw bar or as the chinese have name it wrecking bar.

Today i finally found some time to work on the little niva. Managed to finish the gearbox, tighten the output flange, fill it with gear oil, installed shifter boot, gearbox mount, and transfer case coupler, i also marked all the bolts.
