220 3 ph to 440 3 ph ?

I purchased a Reid 2-c grinder to occasionally grind shims. Problem is I have 220 volt 3 phase and the grinder motor plate lists it needs 440 volt 3 phase .whats the best way to do this ?

If it's a single voltage motor (440 V only), you can either have the motor re-wound at a motor shop for 220V, use a 220/440 volt buck-boost transformer, or most likely the best option is to replace the motor with a new 220V, 3 phase motor.

Boosting a voltage through a transformer is doable but involves heavy losses in the form of heat.

There are special transformers with robust insulation that support this without derating, otherwise the transformer will need to be derated.

I agree with the above statement: buy a motor that matches your voltage or get yours rewound.

The step up transformer is a good option. Three of my machines are 575V. I am feeding a small 6kVA, 240-600V 3 phase dry type transformer from my phase converter. No issues at all. Originally I was using a 5 HP RPC for generating the 3 phase. Recently I upgraded to a 20 PhasePerfect (for the "new CNC"). The transformer works great off either style of phase converter (I've been using it about 5 years).

I was able to get the transformer used from a rental shop, for $100. My three machines that are designed for 575V power would be quite a chore to change over the motors - so the transformer was a no brainer.

You could maybe find a vfd with 220v 3ph input. Here in Sweden we have 400v 3ph in residential buildings and my vfd takes that both in and out. I'll leave it to someone more electrically inclined to find a suitable model.

It is only a 1 Hp motor, simplest solution and probably least expensive would be a 3 phase step up transformer. I am thinking something like a 1.5-2kVa should be adequate, alternative would check with a motor shop as to the cost of rewiring the motor for 230VAC vs a step-up transformer. Using a step down transformer in reverse can be a problem, as the wingdings are often wound to compensate for internal voltage loss, so the voltage out in reverse may be too high.

3-phase step up transformers are available but they are heavy and not usually economical to ship.
You might be able to find one locally for a good price

Another vote for a step up transformer. That is the least cost method to get what you want.
