I am looking to add a 4 jaw chuck to my 9 inch Atlas lathe. Would an 8 inch chuck be too large for this due to how the jaws need to extend out at times? What size should I get if not that then ...a 6 inch? Currently it has a 6 inch three jaw on it. Thanks in advance.

I would say 6 inch for the 4 jaw also but you might consider 5 if you are going to be doing a lot of large pieces

6" is the most versatile. I've been thinking about picking up a 5" six jaw, since it costs less and covers 90% of my tinkering, but that would an accessory to the must-have 6" four jaw and the handy-but-not-precise 6" three jaw I already have.

I agree that 6" would be the safest.

I'm only a beginner but I recently purchased a 6" 4 jaw chuck for my 9" Logan and I would not want anything bigger on this lathe.
