Hey Guys,
I am finding myself in need of a 4 jaw (D1-4 8") chuck from time to time. I have a PM 1236T and was wondering if I should get Matt's 8" precision 4 jaw or if I can get by with something less expensive. I only use my equipment for personal uses so it doesn't make me a dime. LOL!!! Thanks in advance for the input. :)

I recommend getting the PM Taiwanese direct mount 4J independent, I have had other cheaper Chinese generic 4J chuck and it was poorly balance which caused a lot of vibration over 400 RPM, also the jaws were pretty crappy. I guess OK for low speed work on off center work, but otherwise they can be pretty bad.

There is also the matter of safety, All the bard name chucks have a limit speed in their instruction,s example the bison
4344-200-4 8"-4
is limited to 1800 rpm. A no name chuck will likely have thinner casting webs maybe some porosity. So the limit speed must be lower if it is listed at all. You risk having it explode if it is revolved too quickly.
