I'm new to the forum and have recently adopted an orphan. Its a South Bend 8K (SB1001). It was so cute and needed some love so I just couldn't help myself. One major need is an independent 4 jaw chuck to mount on the D1-3 camlock system. It sounds like a 5" chuck would be ideal for this lathe but I don't see much online in 5" chucks with D1-3 mounts. My thinking is to buy a D1-3 backplate from Shars and look for a plain back chuck to mount to it. However, I don't have any experience with these things and I am hoping someone can tell me if there will be any problems. I'm assuming that I'll have to drill and tap 3 holes in the chuck to mount it to the back plate so I'm wondering if there may be some interference on a 4 jaw chuck.
Does this sound like a reasonable approach?

the plan sounds solid.
i doubt you will run into interference with the mounting studs, if that's what you were worried about.
yep, you'll be doing some drilling and tapping! but it shouldn't be that critical- a 4 jaw can be adjusted to have the work run true.
