Guys, is upgrading the headstock bearings to taper bearings a worth while investment?

I would only do that upgrade if the OE bearings were worn out and ready for replacement. I would not invest the time and effort into that unless the bearings already needed replacement.

I would say it depends on the work you are going to do, and what accuracy you want.

Ball bearings are not designed to support any significant axial loads. And I cannot speak to the quality of the bearings in your HF.

I replaced the ball bearings in my MM 7x16 and saw and immediate difference in smoothness and accuracy. Install wasn't that big a deal to me. YMMV...

Did you check the runout in your lathe? Usually these mini lathes have incredibly small runout for their price point. The indicator barely moved when I checked mine.

Unless something was broken, or there was noticeable runout, I would probably leave it alone.
