I've used a lot of 1045 for non-critical stuff. Better than 1018. For anything requiring real strength I go with 1144 stressproof at a minimum. Use a lot of that. I've also used 4140 (annealed and heat treated). You can get both from speedy metals. Look under their alloy section.
