Another Hendey Refurbish

The spindle dust cover on the Hendeys is a brass ring that threads onto the end of the spindle bearing. It is designed to be removed with a pin spanner... most of the time they get taken off by someone using a punch and hammer in the pin spanner holes to force them to unscrew. This destroys the holes and deforms the thin brass cover, making them even more difficult to install and remove.

The one for this lathe was no exception... all 4 pin holes were ruined, and someone had drilled a new hole... and then ruined it... the entire cover was pretty beat up.

This morning, I chucked the cover up in the Soith Bend and picked up the existing (and out of round) thread with an internal threading bar, then *just* cleaned up the threads... I didn't power the South Bend up, just engaged the half nuts and turned the chuck by hand to clean the threads up.

I then used a burr in my Dremel to clean the ruined holes up, then filled them by TIG brazing with silicon bronze. I then skimmed the outer diameter on the South Bend and polished the front face...

It fits... it is still snug, but not difficult to thread on. There are still some dents and dings, especially on the corner radius, but it is a lot better than it was.

I will eventually re-establish the spanner holes around the outside... in case it ever needs to be removed again.

Really nice. I like that there are a few dings left. I have some too. Dave

You do such an amazing job.
Thanks for taking the time to share this, it is very much appreciated!

I've been working on the brass gearbox plates... they turned out pretty good, not perfect, but decent...

I have the tailstock disassembled and soaking in the parts cleaning tank... I also disassembled the feed stop rod and cleaned it... all of the parts off it are soaking also.

I was hoping to havd this lathe running this week, but probably won't get that far.

Maybe next week...

I spent the morning taking the drive system off of Hendey #1 and mounting it on Hendey #2... #1 looks naked now, but #2...

Of course I had to oil it and fire it up...

It runs!!!

The feeds all work, and so do the half nuts... I only ran it for 5 minutes or so, just checking things out, so didn't play with the taper attachment.

I'll finish the tailstock and go through the chuck, then I'll be ready to sling some chips! I hope...

Yesterday I disassembled the collet closer, cleaned and polished it, and reassembled it...

...and cleaned the spindle nose adapter and a couple of collets...

I checked the runout of the ½" collet... it was less than .001". I need to machine a thread protector for the spindle.

This morning I assembled and installed the tailstock...

...and the steady rest...

...and the collet storage box. This box is a very neat method of storing the collets, spindle nose, and collet closer.

The collet closer tube slides down into the mounting tube...

I think this is a very neat setup. The lathe is looking complete...20211203_112700.jpg

Next up... finish cleaning all of the collets and clean and paint the travel rest.

Really looking nice! Good work.

Great looking lathe. That collet storage box is a great touch as well.
When you finish with this one, will it be possible to get a group shot of
all the Hendeys at once?

Not really... I can get two of them in one shot...20211204_193249.jpg

Thats 'Baby Hendey' (the 12x4) on the left, the 14x6 (refurbish #1) is on the far right past the South Bend 14 ½...

The current project Hendey is on the other side of the wall behind Baby Hendey.

You can see #1 and #2 both in this pic, but not the 12x4...

I have a lot packed into a small area, so I had to eliminate a lot of junk to make room for more machines...
