Inspired by a few great posts here about spindle lock/hand wheel, I decided to make my own spindle clamp so that I can easily switch between 3-jaw, 4-jaw chucks and er-32 chuck on my 12” Atlas Craftsman lathe.
The idea was from the bicycle handle bar quill. I basically started with 3/4” round stock drilled and tapped one end to 3/8-16.
Cut the stock into two diagonal pieces, one with square end will serves as end piece for the clamp. The other piece was reamed to bigger diameter (size is not too critical), this pieces will be compressed off center and clamp on the side wall.
Finally, took and 1” hex stock, turned one end to 3/4” round and center drill with 3/8 hole, then cut diagonal to mate with the center piece.
Put all three pieces together with a 3/8 6” bolt from Home Depot.
After tighten the bolt, the clamp completely locked on the spindle. I can use 1” wrench which provides enough leverage allow me to remove the chuck from the other side.
If I need to hand thread or tap, I can put an 1” socket with a 1/2” ratchet. It will used to turn like a hand “wheel”.
