Can anyone tell me what this is? I was thinking it was the Spindle nose cap/thread protector. There are no markings on it.

I agree. A nose cap would have a larger hole at allow use of collets with adapter and draw bar.

I might not use a collet nose, but all Atlas owners should be interested in having a thread protector. That nose would convert nicely in one or two steps.

Or if the through-hole is about 0.500". maybe the collets made for the 6" which don't seem to have had an industry-assigned name/number. They max out at a work-piece diameter of a little over 1/4".

To convert it to a thread protector, you would have to bore it out to a little over 25/32". And probably thin down the un-threaded part considerably.

I will probably leave it as is and make a thread protector. It will be a good project for me.
