I had a skinner chuck come with my lathe. It is suposed to be a universal and independant but I can't figure out how to engage the universal function. Thoughts?

Should be a knob/slot arrangement on the back side of the chuck. I have one on a late 1800,s lathe. Mike

This one I found on line.

I read the patent to find out about the knob. I can't get it to engage.

Take it apart and clean it.. Chucks are easy to work on. Look for stamping that show which jaw goes where, and markings to line the halves of the chuck up first. BTW, it looks like that knob either screws and then you shift it, or you pull it. I assume you tried that. So lets assume that it is seized, or swarf is in there preventing it from moving. Could even be hardened grease...

I would not waste a lot of time with it, they are not known for accuracy, but, yes, take it apart and clean it out; likely it will work, but not well.
