I would like to make a large articulated arm holder for welding, positioning and just when I need a 3rd arm. I was thinking about making a giant Noga style holder that can be locked with one central clamp.

I am a little hesitant to start this thread because it may not work well. I am concerned with long arms it may not lock up well...but here goes.

I have a lot of design questions that I will need to answer along the way. I am really unsure about materials and weight. I have dissected my indicator holder for starters.

If I am going to put in the time to make this I would rather use stainless but I hate to machine that especially for a prototype that may get re-worked.
First issue-Assuming I may use a 1" ball at the base what length arm can I support? I am thinking 14" x 2 for 28" total? More? Less?

If I am think of the same threads, each one of the joints on those has to be locked individually. Or did I miss a thread? I want one screw that locks all 3 joints. Hollow arms with wedges and rods.

Yes I saw that one! It's a little smaller than I was planning and I not sure it has as much motion i.e. I'm not sure if the ball joint shoulders rotate. Besides, I want to build it!

does all the things a noga does. .. i use one with a 10" tall base and clamp on the end.

.750 and 1.00" Maybe too small?

The socket is an interesting design because it needs to rotate. It cannot mount on a fixed threaded rod. I made a design using a retaining clip:

Hi Robert
I just found this thread and am looking forward to your progress and results, as I would also like to try this. I don't have a Noga to disassemble yet, so any information you could pass on would be greatly appreciated. Looks great so far!

Hi Robert,
Cool build, looking forward to seeing more. Beautiful finish too. Will you be knurling the center portions of the shafts/rods (un-machined area)?
