Atlas Clausing 4804 Spindle Won't Lock

An old school method for unscrewing a stuck chuck is to cut a short piece of 2x4 and tighten it down between the chuck jaws so it sticks straight out sideways. Everything in neutral, then wind up and spin the chuck robustly. The 2x4 stops abruptly when it encounters the ways, but the momentum of the spindle unscrews the chuck.

I got this tip from Dave Meridian who was around back in the day and used to advertise in HSM.
