I am guessing that is how the carriage is supposed to bear on the ways, but am not so familiar with Barnes lathes, but I do know that they are different than most others, I think we need to hear from other Barnes owners. I do have an old Barnes catalog, but do not think it would be of any help.

Gear rack is generally sized by diametral pitch, but it could be circular pitch, which would be much more rare.
