best method to drill a centering hole in a square block of aluminum

Old time machinists used a piece of cigarette paper to sneak up on an edge. They pinch the paper between the end mill and the workpiece, then you know the edge is .001 away (thickness of the paper)
Spindle centerline is 1/2 the endmill diameter + paper

ps you can do the same thing with a piece of drill rod the diameter of your end mill

What rpm are you using with the edge finder? I’ve noticed that 1500 works great on aluminum but seems to jump and grab on steel.
