Bevel gear on input shaft

I am rebuilding and old pto driven gear box on a buzz saw. There is an input shaft and two output shafts. One at 90 degrees and the other out the backside ( not sure why ) I have it all disassembled and need to replace the bearings. I have two bearings out. ( see post in questions, about stubborn retaining ring).
The other two bearings can’t be removed without first removing the bevel gear. The gear is keyed. Can this be pressed off? What holds it on? There are no snap rings just the key way. Would it have been put on with an interference fit.
any suggestions I would appreciate it. If we don’t get too much snow tonight I’ll post a picture tomorrow

Pictures would help. Before pressing any gears off double check for set screws. Don't press any bearings off unless you plan on replacing them. Press them off usually will destroy them. Sometimes the bevel gear can be held in place with spacers between the bearings or it could be a pressed fit. Check close before pressing on it. There should be some way to set the clearance on the gears , so watch for shims and if any where they come from. Extra time in taking it apart can save a lot of problems in the long run.

I will try and get pictures some time today.

I am assuming there will be shims between the bearing and gear. The bearings are shot, so they have to be changed. Once this snowstorm eases up I may drop by a local machine shop to get their opinion also .

Here is the input shaft. The gearbox has a disengage lever. That is the reason for the love joy type connector on the one end. I can’t see any means of set screws or snap ring to hold these on, other than the key way on the bevel gear.

BTW this has laid in a fence row for 20 some odd years.

Looks like a press fit. Soak in pb blaster and either use a jaw type puller or press it off.
 
No keyway in the shaft itself so if there is a key it would have to be a woodruff. And I guess being a bevel gear they weren’t worried about it walking off — no place for it to go except into the mating gear. Good luck :encourage:
 
I think Francist is right on the woodruff key. Not much to pull on unless you pull on the bearing. Warming up the gear might help, could well be a shrink fit.
The shape of the dogs makes it look like it might be an overrunning clutch to give the blade time to spin down.
