Buying Used Electric Motors A Bargain?

Hi,
Thought I would put up some pics of a Motor I bought for my Delta/ Rockwell 14" Bandsaw.

It is a 1.5 HP, set up for 220v with a CCW Rotation made by Dayton.

Bought it for $30 on FB and was just a short drive away.

Motor was pretty trashed, full of dirt, growling Bearings, ect.

Tore it all down, blew dirt out of it for awhile.

Cleaned everything, installed new Bearings and got it back together and it runs great.

This same Motor new looks like it sells for about $600???

Can't afford that so always looking for deals on these bigger HP Motors for the Shop.

Looks great, nice job on the rebuild!
Yeah, first place I look for a motor is on the secondhand market, why pay more...

Hi,
Thanks, this Motor was "Funny", bought it just on the Owner's word that it ran ok.

When I got it home and plugged it in nothing what so ever?

Pulled the junk Switch and went straight to power (220V) and blew the Breaker!

That's it!

As you can see in the pic, labled wires got a schematic and wired it by the book, and it ran great.

Then did the rebuild, should be a great motor!

It is of course risky to buy a motor without plugging it in- others haven't been so lucky
The windings could be shorted and you would never know until you got it home
I try to bring a cheater cord with me when motor shopping

Hi,
You Gentlemen are correct and I was told he would run it if I wanted.

When I got there that was not set up and the Seller was a Vet with a Leg missing so I did not push it.

However, I did give it the "smell test", which it passed!

To be honest, if the Motor was trash for $30 I would throw it in the garbage can, and call it good.

Admittedly, I have been getting an education on Sellers with FB.

So far have done pretty well actually, but still learning!

The seller might not have been intentionally being deceptive. The motor may have worked fine when it was last used. The wiring could have gotten screwed up when it was disconnected.

Hi,
I wonder if he said it was set up for 220V by mistake?

I do not think he was being deceptive, and never meant to convey that, if I did?

I'm not an Electric Motor Guru, so when it popped the Breaker I said to heck with it and started from scratch.

It ramped right up after that, and I started the rebuild.

Just sayin, keep my eyes open for these old Motors, and grab them when I can.
