Carbide shell mill inserts

They're SPU/SPG inserts. Inserts are measured by the inscribed circle but with these being square can basically measure from side to side. Size 42_ is 1/2" IC.

The ones I have are SPG 423. Only reason I have such a large nose radius is cause the NR don't matter for my use & they were cheaper than 422s. My chamfering machine uses these & cuts on the side of the insert, the corners don't get used.

You can use SPU or SPG. The last letter denotes tolerance but basically the Us are molded (well they are still partly ground) & the Gs are ground (tighter tolerance). So the SPG would in theory have a sharper edge & slightly weaker edge. I didn't notice a difference between SPU & SPG but this is just a chamferring machine.

SPU422 is very common.

Can anyone recommend a decent quality face mill for spu/spg inserts? I’ll be running it in a 2hp r8 Wells Index. I was given a large quantity of inserts.

Shars has a line of integrated R8 shank face mills but I’m unsure of the quality.

I just bought a 3" face shell mill from CME tools.

Works great for me.
About $110.00 Mine came with a R8 adapter.

Inserts a fairly inexpensive also. 10 for $30.
