Cheap inserts

Been using Chinese inserts for years, turning, threading, parting and boring. They work well, sometimes chip on interrupted cuts so I use HSS or brazed carbide for that.

You can buy a holder set like this for $28 or individually. Inserts are under $5 for 10pcs.

As an option too you could search eBay often for the inserts you need. For both my work and my home personal shop I regularly find name brand inserts new at a pretty big price cut. Sometimes they are open box too if you don't need a full pack which is nice. I buy more from tooling liquidators rather than sellers who look like they're selling knock-offs.

I've acquired a lifetime supply of various Sandvik Coromant inserts and tooling from Amazon over the last two years for 80% or more off. You just have to hunt for the "1 left" sale items. I see a number of different insert types available right now for about $20 a box (Amazon Prime, too).
