Hello everyone!
I’m new and looking at a local Clausing lathe. Not sure (no model # yet) but it looks like a 6300?
My question is on the pictures of the ways! They appear very marked, dinged and worn. Definitely scares me but maybe I’m wrong with the hardened ways?

also not sure where the pictured areas are on the ways but assume close to headstock?

please let me know what you think?

thanks!

If the ways were hardened, they would not be dinged up.

Looks well used and possibly abused- I would keep looking. That layer of sooty grime is a tipoff that the machine is too worn for the seller to bother cleaning, and is too lazy to even clean it for sale; he doesn't deserve your money

To me, if the ways are bad I pass on the lathe-just too difficult and expensive to fix.

He just transferred into the Department of Redundancy Department...

Ok. Yeah…. I’m under the impression these ways *
’should’ be hardened… so the damage is a little more concerning….
Agree with the points about dirty condition.
makes me think it wasn’t taken care of and certainly just wants rid of it.
shame. These clausings look like very nice lathes and this one has a complete taper assy, collet closer and full box of collets.

they're just some dings. Stone 'em down so they don't catch on the carriage and you're good to go. As to buy/ don't buy, that depends on the price. Looks pretty well tooled, that's for sure.

Seller is asking $1100.
I *think* thats a decent price for a 6300 in PA?
still don’t know model #.

looks like a ton of grinding dust doesn't it? Do you think toolpost grinding? Or its been sitting in an area behind a bench grinder.
it has no toolpost (not a huge deal) and no tooling other than the stack of chucks/faceplate and box of collets
It’s fairly close so going to take a look isn’t too hard.
It’s pending so possibly already sold.
