Slowly getting my M head on a Clausing 8511 in shape. I hope. My question is for anyone with an M head B&S #7 bore. How far up in the quill is the collet drawn? Mine is going in ~ 3/8" deep. A picture of a dry, just read I should have done it wet, Dykem blue test is attached. The contact doesn't seem very good.

TIA,
Ron

Using Prussian blue would have been a better choice than Dykem, also it looks like it may have been a bit dirty inside. I used an M head for years on an old B&S horizontal mill before I got a Induma vertical mill; it served me well when I was just getting started in my business back in the early 1970s.

On my M-Head the BS7 collets stick out of the taper bore slightly when tight. I have to look to get exact measurements, but I think it's 1/16th to 1/8" stick out. Hope this helps.

Best Regards,
Bob

Thanks Bob. I must have been having an off night, that's what I've got.

Thanks again, here's the collet with Prussian Blue:
