Compound Shim?

It seems I am always inserting a shim under the cutter to center it on a work piece. I was toying with the idea of slipping some shim material under the compound slide with the locking bolt loose, then tightening the bolt, to raise the entire compound slide up the height needed to center the cutter.
How do you adjust the cutters on your lathe?

BTW, my lathe is a HF 9X20 by Central Machinery about 8-9 years old.
I have done some home-made changes to it, such as a 12 inch diameter wheel attached to a bicycle handlebar goose-neck type clamping setup; a 4 inch diameter wheel/crank on the end of the lead screw; and a 10x10" plastic chip guard that has a 3" dropped front on it.

Thanks for your ideas.

Interesting idea but I wouldn't do that myself. Shimming the tol bit is the proper way to get tool height. Just make a shim for each of your different size cutters & always keep those shims with each cutter.

Sounds like you need a QCTP. Once you get one you'll be wondering why it's been so long not having one.
