I'm doing a restoration on a Clausing 8530 mill that has some small parts that have a black finish. It looks a bit like gun bluing but is black. Does anyone now how this is done and with what? Any help appreciated.

Did you read THIS THREAD in this same forum? I'm thinking that maybe it is Japanning but I am no expert. Heck, I barely have enough knowledge to rank as a beginner.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like Caswell has what I need.

Cool! didn't even know that existed. Now I have another option for finishing.

First time I bought the kit, second time I just bought the concentrate and sealer. If you don't already parkerize parts it another way to protect steel, however you do need to heat the solution to 195 degrees and have good ventilation. The Caswell black oxide does work over top of the parkerizing too (before you oil it).
