While having the cross-slide dismantled on my 10" SB to facilitate installation of YADRO system, wear was noticeable on the dovetails due to swarf getting in from the sides which are not protected. Guess they never worried about such things back then.
To remedy the situation I milled a flat at the bottom on each side of the cross-slide for a 1/2" wide steel strip to hold a wiper strip in place which now covers the side gaps. Also made a filler piece for each side of the new longer connecting arm (necessary to facilitate the YADRO) to extend the length of both shield strips. Held everything in place with 8-32 BHCSs. For the shield I just used a strip of back-to-back plastic electricians tape, will find sturdier stuff if that doesn't last.
I think this mod is really going to help keep dirt & grime out of the dovetails.

Maybe some of you might find this interesting
