This morning I was able to cut off a smallish piece of hardened H-13 steel and affix it to a square 7/8 inch piece of rod
made to fit the Hardy hole. A 4 flute carbide cutter was used to shape the cutting edge. The cutter held up pretty well
but I could see the faint red glow of the end mill telling me not to push my luck. It survived the ordeal and seems no worse
for wear and ready for the next project. A one inch piece of mild steel(about 2.5 x 2.75 inches) was used to mount the H-13
chisel point which was then welded securely to the 7/8 inch post. P1020655.JPG
I am a neophyte to smithing activity but could see that a cut off would be one of the things that would be useful. The tool fits in the Hardy in either
direction which I would guess the reason for a square hole in the first place.

Interestingly, the photo looks like a rectangular Hardy hole but it indeed is square as well as the post that fits in it.......

You will be making many more hardy tools as you go, smithing is another addiction
for us ferrophiles and we just cannot stop makin more stuff !!!............................................
