So I've owned this grizzly 4003 lathe for 20 years now, switched from 3 jaw to 5c to 4 jaw many times. Never give this any thought til this afternoon. WHat exactly holds the D1-3 cam lock chuck to the spindle????? I know the 3 cam pegs lock it down tight, but what keeps these pegs from turning back out?

They can't turn if the cam is locked . :big grin:

But the cams just turn into place and don't snap, like they lock into position with some type of detent ball or the like, seems like vibration could easily loosen them

Mine have a set screw in a scallop in the side of the pin.
I thought all were like that. Are yours not that way?

Yes, mine are like that. Same way on the 3 pins inside the backing plate

Friction is the only thing preventing the cams from rotating, and that's easily enough.
