ER collet won't let go of stock...

Removing work from ER collets.

Alright, I tried my first trial with collets, just some simple drill test into some aluminum roundbar. That worked ok...

Now here is my problem-- I unscrewed the collet cap of my chuck, but the roundbar is still tight inside the collet and won't budge.

I guess my next move is to take a screwdriver and hammer it on the crease section to wedge the ER-collet itself from its collet-chuck.

My question, is if this is normal? Did I over-tighten? I am working with aluminum stock so maybe that also is part of the issue?

Is there a safer way to remove stock material an ER collet wont release?

When you get the collet snapped into the nut, It will pull the collet out of the holder.

Do not feel bad. A lot of folks make that mistake first time using er collets. The sets don't come with proper instructions.

King, glad to see you got yourself some collets! Did you get yourself that chuck for your lathe you were pondering?

I think most everyone does the "learning by doing" trick with ER's first time out of the box.

For now, I used the collet chuck that came with my box of collets- the type that requires the draw-bar.

I am thinking on one of these two to try next:

The second by LMS seems noticeably more expensive, but has superior concentricity?

Yes, it's nice to be able to run stock thru the headstock. That's a downside of the drawbar type.

How would you mount the LMS chuck? I am not familiar with your lathe. Do you need a backing plate too with that chuck?
