I’m making a jig where I need to slowly draw a threaded rod through a nut and then quickly release it back to its starting position. A You Tube video suggested a push button nut like part number 98150A710 from McMaster Carr. I plan on imbedding this nut into a block of aluminum and I’m wondering if anyone has drilled and tapped the button on one of these to extend the push button? If so, how did it go?

I looked at one of my tools, which uses a ⅜"-16 size push button nut. The button on mine is ½" diameter and the slightly domed head extends about .275" out past the cross hole (yours, for a ½" threaded rod, will be a bit larger.) I gave it the file test, and it's not hardened. So it looks like there's plenty of metal there for drilling and tapping.

PS - you might want to check out this thread:

MontanaLon posted this video in the thread. It shows how to make your own nut. You might be able to adapt the design for your jig.
