First project on the 1030

I'm sure a few of you guys are also 'gun' people...I'm a gun guy. Hence the "NavyShooter" handle.

So, my first real project on the new 1030 is a tripod extension leg for my 1919A4 Browning.

What does it do? Well, look the his picture:

You can see how low to the ground the tripod is. On a wet day, that means you're getting down and wet too...and it also means that you can't shoot the gun at the local indoor range (that is certified for fullbore rifles.)

So...I saw an AA Tripod extension for a 1917A1 Browning once...on E-pay, and it was about $400 US, plus shipping, and coming from overseas....so I figured I'd make one myself instead.

Bill of materials:

2.5" x4" round brass stock
4"x6" round 1018 Steel
2.25" seamless tube (0.25" wall) 28" long (max I can fit with the 3-jaw chuck on the 30" bed)

Cost of materials: $102 Canadian.

Build time so far - 6-7 hours.

Turns out that I needed 3.5" steel, not 4", so it took a while to turn that down...

Here's some pictures:

28" length - just barely enough space to turn it and do the facing.

Spinning the brass for the top.

Fits perfectly in the steel tube.

Turning my first taper with the 1030. Works well! Perfect fit!

The chips flew this afternoon.

I'm done the main parts.

The gun is in 7.62mm.

Next steps are some holes to bolt the two ends on, then a latch bolt.

OK, ends are secured with some 1/4-20 socket head cap screws, and I turned one of them down to act as a latch-bolt.

I'm quite pleased. I note that the idea of an 'upper arm' to steady it while loading will be unnecessary because it's resting on the mount/swivel, so that's the highest it can point.

I am still considering the insertion of a short recoil transmitting arm back from the rear of the extension to the cross-bar on the back of the tripod (holding the legs apart. Proper name of this part is the traversing bar...)

I think I'll take it out this week and try it first though.
