Fly Cutter Question

I usually use a face mill , don’t like the banging of flycutters on my mill. So did this piece stay put in your vise ?

That finish looks about as good as you could hope for considering that you were milling a weld. Just keep in mind (and it appears you did) that the rpm of a fly cutter with a HSS bit will have to be kept quite low. I've had good luck with the cheapest brazed carbides I could find on Aliexpress. You will, of course, need a silicon carbide grinding wheel to sharpen them.

I have a dedicated 8" aluminum oxide grinding wheel I use for my HSS bits. I did indeed run the cutter slow. Yes the bang bang could not be avoided. I checked the edge of the bit as I went along and it has held up well so far.
Yes, I used a parallel and tapped it down then tightened the sh$%^t out of it. The jaws were taken apart, cleaned and reinstalled. No oil anywhere.
