Full Size Bed Frame, From Scratch

Nice looking frame ... and yes, stain tends to be very irregular on fir (or a lot of other soft woods). I've had the same problem a bunch of times. Adding a second coat of stain definitely helped!

You brushed on the stain...

We use pneumatic pad sander with 400 ish wet dry and wet sand the work.

The moisture of the stain causes some fibers to raise up allowing sandpaper to cut them off.

It also "runs it in", after it is all done and the surface dries it is glass smooth.

Danish oil is preferred and you keep it wet until it stops soaking in then sand it.

Still glass smooth but finish deeper in the wood.

Bed looks great.

Certain woods such as pine or fir will have a tendency to blotch when you stain them. Some wood workers use a gel stain which seems to be less of a problem. The other way is to brush on a thinned coat of wood sealer ( really a dewaxed shellac), then stain. Before you do any staining and finishing, do some test pieces first. What you did, still looks just fine.
