Generic slitting saw arbors

I recently took my indusrial strength 4" Niagra R8 slitting saw apart and used a cheapo universal arbor in a place where there was no room for a large nut and shaft to protrude. It worked very well.
 
I always make my own arbors. as for a key. would you rather break the saw or have it spin without damage ?
