Help with Toolcraft return spring

There aren’t any belts at all, the drill is an electric motor.

I thought about putting current directly to the motor, but I’m not sure what the voltage is, including if it’s AC or DC.

I suspect there is another short, like you said. Perhaps on the back side of the circuit board.
