HF mini lathe gear faces are not aligned?

I cant tell exactly but the gears are labeled A,B,C,D

here is the chart usually printed on the mini lathe itself.

look closely at the diagram on the left hand side. showing two different configurations. A,B,C,D and A,B,D [with C left idle and not connected]

in the photo you posted, you are using the A,B,D configuration. these two configurations are accomplished by moving the D gear. left to right, or right to left on the end of the lead screw by use of the bushing.

the parts you are playing with are cap screw, washer, gear, bushing.

the gear and the bushing both have key-ways cut in them there is also a key-way in the end of the lead screw. and a key-stock locking it all together.

are you missing ANY of those parts?

with the bushing you are moving the gear back and forth. on the shaft. this creates the two configurations.

bushing on the front of the gear [as in your photo] . . . A,B,D configuration.

bushing on the back of the gear . . . A,B,C,D configuration.

If you have all the parts your supposed to, and they are all installed correctly, and it still does not line up?

it should be a snug fit on the shaft. try pushing it over and see if it stays put. In the photo i see like a 1/16 inch gap. it needs to be flush against the pillow block.

check the end to end play of the lead screw. Is the lead screw worn? broken? installed correctly?

hope that helps. more change gear info down below

In the set of change gears I got with my HF lathe, there are 2 80 gears.I thought they were the same, but on one of them has a symmetrical ID.But on the other one,one end of the ID is smaller.I believe but don't know for sure that this odd gear is supposed to go in the D position so you don't get that gap.
