Horizontal Band saw question

Finishing up first side rough-out of wheel. I will finish side one in a few days.

I had a bit of time today. I was able to get the main pulley/ Gear cut. I still need to make the hub the will attach. Most likely next week. The gears turned out better than I thought. I will need to smooth out all the edges.

Wow, that cast plate looks so much better than Craftsman Zamak!

Is the pinion still good? If you re-make the pinion, what material would you consider to engage the aluminum with?
 
I ended up drawing up the pinion. Work will be printing me 2 hopefully. Nylon non glass filled. The existing pinion is just ok. I can debur it so smooth things out. The old pinion does have good engagement to the new ring gear. I received the new bushings so I can install them next week after I bore the bore concentric to the pulley and ring. Ofter I marry the 2 pieces together.

With wear and quieter operation in mind, I was thinking a plastic would be the way to go. Glass filled nylon is even better, that's a very tough composite.

The printing used for the pinion called out 33%GF NYLON for it. The Glass is very abrasive. Regular nylon I am thinking will be much easier on the ring gear. As it is now 6061 Aluminum it will be tougher than the Zamac. So the saw should outlast me.

Just thinking. I might see a f I have any Delrin. As I have a solid model of the pinion. I will machine one up and compare the 2 materials.

Oh, that's 6061? I was assuming MIC-6 because of the size. It's a low load system and the pinion chunk looks large enough that I doubt you'll ever have an issue with delrin. A lot more strength is available with GF nylon, but you probably won't need it. The original was zamak, after all. Zamak does have some respectable engineering properties, so it's not a total joke, but delrin on a 6061 cog should run for a very long time.

I used what was available in our remnants. It took longer to machine as I had to drain the coolant last week to get ready to ship. So I had to use air and some WD40. Not ideal but it worked out ok. Really reduced depth cuts and feed rate. I am really going to miss getting to use these machines.

I will post up on the Delrin Pinion if I find some stock.

Finished up the drive wheel and they just dropped off the pinion gears. Nice mesh so I can do a test assembly this weekend.
