Lots of mention of " neutral/ ground"...STOP THIS!
Neutral is the mid point of the 240 transformer that feeds the 240 vac single phase supply and ground is SAFETY GROUND.
They are connected at the service entrance and this point is often "meter ground"
Never confuse or connect the two...EVER!
We had squirrels chew up the neutral feed and like got interesting as the neutral only carries out of balance currents.
If tied together the safety ground can follow a load or have voltage on it rendering it useless.
Never associate them in discussions.
Dryers that are 3 wire should be L1, L2 and SG, but some may be neutral depending on how wired.
