I need a plate for a tool setter for my CNC mill. What it is for is the plate that the tool would press on to get the offset reading.

Tool is placed in the chuck jog over to the setter and push down to get a reading, then next tool.

It needs to be a 2 inch round disk 1/4 inch thick.

Needs to be hardened to resist tool marks

Needs to have both sides ground flat and parallel to each other.

Needs to be magnetic.

I don’t have a surface grinder and that would be needed.

Could someone help with this?

I need to know where to buy stock, what size (1/2 thick to have room to grind?), what type of metal, should it be hardened prior to grinding.

I am making a modification to a Starrett tool setter.

Here is what it is for. Craigslist find. Not sure what it was used for but the top pushes in and the indicator turns. Also the red LED lights up when pushed 0.050 or so.

the disk could start out 1/4 and be ground flat leaving it big enough. I plan to use it “Upside down” with the scale right side up. I plan to hold the new disk on with 3 magnets. Should keep it in place

Does anyone know what it was for? Does not seem to have tool marks on the table. Was it mounted with the magnet on top?

Cadillac,

Can get a piece of 2" round bar that is A1 or W1 (Air or water hardening) . Cut a piece off in the lathe, harden it, surface grind it. Leave the outside diameter as stock. Diameter would be +/- 0.005" or so. I can do this for you.

Better yet...

I can surface harden the steel disc instead of trying to find A-1, W-1 2 inch diameter bar stock.
