So I had been looking for a metal lathe for about a year or two. I was mainly looking for a South Bend or Logan and all the ones I could find for decent prices had bed wear that I was too worried would be problematic.

I ahd a vacation coming up and REALLY wanted something to play with while I had time and so decided to buy a friend's Sherline 4000. We got to a price and he included a ton of stuff.

I decided that since I now had a lathe in route, I needed a way to do milling also. So... A milling base was added to the assortment.

Then I decided that I need to get rid of some stuff that I hadn't used in ages and make some room (still working on that process). So I posted an ad on Craigslist selling a 3d Printer, a Printrbot Simple, I had that had been gathering dust (didn't suit my needs). Someone wanted it and offered to trade me..... You guessed it, another Sherline.

The lathe itself is in great shape and came with a Bison Chuck that's easily $300. I will likely need to toss the electronics as they are usually proprietary to the companies software, but the steppers may be good.

So as you can see, I'm starting a nice little collection.

The one lathe is set up with a sliding saddle and I'll keep that set up as long as I think its useful. I do want to add a ER32 Collet headstock to one of them and find a 4400 for the longer bed as well.......

Ugh... I've got it bad, haven't I?

Very cool toys! And no, it's not too bad a bug for now. Just keep telling yourself it will cure itself which it will....upon a dreary Minus 6ft under and here lies moniker. Lol. Share some stories soon and merry Christmas . Cg

in the last 3 days I spent 4.2k in a 30 taper cnc mill and 10hp cnc rpc rig. You're fine or were both off the mound.

I see you are in Martinsburg, WV. It's a little far from our area, but you should be aware of CAMS -- the Chesapeake Area Machining Society.

See: http://cams-club.org

and consider attending one of our meetings.

Best,

Ha ha. My brain read that as "Cheapskate Machining Society". I was jumping up thinking, "Where can I join?!

Fully disassembled the non-cnc lathe and put it back together after a good cleaning. Decided to remove the sliding mechanics and reinstalled the handwheel until I can get the cnc up and running (or at least dual shaft steppers and add handwheels).

Also disassembled the Bison chuck and cleaned it. Damn there was a bunch of shellac in there. Soaked it in solvent for a couple hours and its all freed up now. I'll do one more cleaning on it and grease and oil it. That thing will be a staple in my shop I'm sure. Rock solid.

David - I work in DC. 5 hours of commuting 5 days a week....... Been doing it for more than 10 years.... I need help...... lol

Russianwolf,

Welcome to the addiction.

I too got bit by the Sherline bug. That are very capable machines, more so then people give them credit for.

Once I get my garage arranged and get them all setup I will post a few pics.

I wish I had some of yours, Nice finds. I was given a Sherline 5400 mill and 4000 lathe. the lathe was an old 4000 that needed a big time rebuild, but wife did me a favor and I now have a brand new 4400. but I do not have many attachments anyone with any extras let me know. Or if you decide you do not need all that stuff Give me a yell. KVT

new electronics package should arrive tomorrow for the CNC. Went with a Gecko G540 driver in a prebuilt package so that I can also use it for up to 4 axis on the mill if I decide to convert that.

Now I just need to find a computer to run it and decide on Mach3 or LinuxCNC (or try both).

I should have it back up and running in another week or so.

I LOVE my Sherline Mill, although I may have to be selling it to save space funny enough

Mentioned my computer need to our IT guy at the office and he brings me one of our old computers that fits the bill that he was decommissioning due to its age..... Works for me.

Tomorrow a quick trip to Radio Shack for some resistors and wire and I should be set to assemble everything.
