I'm looking for a good very accurate long lasting 4" or 5" machine vise in the budget range of $300. Does any body have recommended vise's. Thanks Mont

I'm also interested in this. I have a 3" inexpensive tilt vise that cannot be called accurate or long lasting, and the clamping pressure is not great. It sits pretty high, so I'm looking for something lower profile, more accurate, and with wider jaws for milling. What has been your experience?

I've had a $250 Shars 4" (202-0991) vise for about a year now and I'm very happy with it, but they're out of stock at the moment.

There is a huge number of sellers on the Bay who are offering Chinese "precision" 4" milling machine vises for around $81, free shipping. I do like this style of vise myself, because it's easy to set up squarely. Just use a machinist's square across the front edge of the table, set the vise against it, and lock it down. Can be mounted on its side, etc. You might even consider getting both one of these and a 5" vise from Glacern or similar source. Two vises are sometimes good to have.

PS - these may all be from the same seller, using different aliases. I notice that all of them come from Ontario, CA.

I have a 6" shars vise at work and like it well enough. At home I have an old 5" kurt that I fixed up. I would go and find a used kurt with your $300. You would do ok with the shars as well.

I sure like the Glacier vise's, would you go for the 4" premium for $599 or the 4" standard for $349 or the 5" standard for $379.
I torn the 4" premium can clap laying on its side and open's to 5". I also wonder if the 5" standard is to large for my g0704.
One great thing Glacier said they take PayPal, that make paying easy for me

Tormach has vises in your price and size range.

They very well may be from the foundry as the ebay vises.

But tormach puts their name on them, stands behind them, and sells some useful jaws for them. The also probably do some quality control, like Shars and their rejects get sold by someone else.

Checking the prices at tormach might make Shars look pretty good.

I have 2, 5" tormach vises and 1, 4" vise purchased from little machine shop. My experiences with Kurt and Orange vises was limited and previous to owning the Tormachs, but I do not feel limited with the Tormach vises.

I bought a PM 5" precision vise with swivel base last year off ebay - around $130 with an ebay coupon. So far very happy with it.

Bought this HFS 5" milling vise. Its not bad so far. Looks like an exact copy of what Grizzly sells..probably the exact same thing.

Took a bunch of cleanup, but it isnt terrible. Was going to upgrade to a Kurt recently but I see they discontinued the 5" so I will stick with this one.
