Im intrigued by 280 AI

What makes choosing the 280 AI even more practical is the fact i have about 23# total between H1000 and RL22 powders. Basically buy dies , some brass, and im loading.

If you are using H1000 and RL22, you want heavier bullets and a slightly larger case than the 280 AI.

Might I recommend the 7mm SAUM at this point? It's a 300 SAUM necked to .284. It's a good cart for those powders and the 150-180 grainers will reach your target with a muzzle velocity in the 3000 fps range. The SAUM fits in a normal SA action, like 243.

The 7mm-08 and 284 win are too small for your slower burning powders.

Now I'm thinking of what to do with a "spare" Rem700 SA action that I "forgot" I had!

L. to R.: 7mm BR, 7-30 Waters, 7mm-08 Rem., 7x57 Mauser, 284 Win., 280 Rem., 7x64 Brenneke, 280 AI, 7mm SAUM, 7mm WSM, 7mm Wby. Mag., 7mm Rem. Mag., 7mm LRM, 7mm STW, 28 Nosler, 7mm RUM. How fast do you want to go?

The 7 Saum is a great cartridge, The availability of brass is its biggest issue.

Just finished chambering this 280 AI last week. According to a couple of reloading manuals I referenced the 7 SAUM and the 280 AI are essentially ballistically identical.

*edited* actually after more thought this doesnt make practical sense from having to re-bore as well as rechamber.

So i've pretty much got my 11x29 lathe ready to start tackling some basic barrel threading. If i prove this to be sucessfull i want to have a go at a rechamber. I have some misc Rem 700 parts and specifically i have a 243 Varmint contour barrel thats almost new. Is it possible to rechamber 243 Rem to 280 AI ?

Go for it. 280 A1 is a great cartridge. Velocity wise on my 26 inch barreled Vanguard it runs along with my 700 RM 24 inch barrel. If you go this route grab some 270 Win brass to fireform. I am using RWS. Bullet used -- 175 Elite Hunder.

I have 3 lathes I chamber with in the garage shop, but I chose the Jet 1024 @Ulma Doctor sourced for me in his AO to chamber the barrel with. One of the reasons, it is easy to change gears to run metric threads for the Vanguard. I chambered a fireforming barrel first from a new take off 7-08 barrel. I saved some good barrel life by having a dedicated fireforming set up.

Precision wise, here's a target at 1K, cold bore, center mass in the wind. 175 Elite Hunder RL-23, 215 FGMM.

Never mind the head/ear shots, we were screwing around with our 26 inch suppressed 300WMs, running cold bore head shots (taking turns shooting and cooling) with 215 Hybrids coming out around 3040, from 200 to 1K
