I bought a used criterion 2" boring head on ebay that came with a brazed tip boring bar. Question: Can I use SCLCR style boring bars with this head? Specifically, will the flat surface on the shank align the bar in the boring head appropriately? Thanks, Daniel

I hope so, because I’ve done on a few occasions in the past

Most boring bars intended for use in a boring head have the cutting edge centered on the bar and as long as your bar is made like this then it will probably work. If the insert is not on center then it will cut with negative rake and will chatter and your depth of cut will not advance accurately with the leadscrew of the head.

Having an orienting flat or not isn't critical since you can easily align the bar by eye.
