Just added a 101.21200 to my shop out west

I installed the new bearings and it is quiet now. I am thinking about changing the motor mounting to eliminate the idle pulley. What's your opinion?

I'm the wrong person to ask about that. I have the older 101.21400 (art deco styling) which is a little different, and other than using a link belt and QCTP run it as it came from the factory.

I'm guessing you are considering this to narrow the footprint of the lathe?

I just want to eliminate another moving part.

I don't think that would be a good idea. Tthe speed or torque range of whatever motor you are using is almost certainly lower than the current one.
